Racers in dramatic last gasp Bannister equaliser

Racing Club Warwick entertained high flying Lichfield City and following last weeks defeat to Atherstone Town were looking to get back into winning ways against the only other outfit to have beaten them this year, and what a game it turned out to be.

Lichfield got off to the best of starts when a quick throw-in down the right on 2 minutes was quickly whipped in and Tom Massey scored a good headed goal from close range. Scott Turner then hit the post from a tight angle but it wasn't long before City added a second but not before the card happy referee had started to book City players for fun. Lewis Hayden was robbed of the ball just inside his own half and Max Black set Matthew Hardiman free and he calmly slotted home past Charlie Bannister. Mansell almost made it three but shot well over before the card took their toll when Dan Sheppard was booked twice in quick succession to get his marching orders for what must of been something that was said. This didn't deter a very good Lichfield and a superb Joe Hartshorne James Taylor combination saw Hartshorne fire home past Bannister to make it 0-3 and a shocked Townsend Meadow were shell shocked.

Racing needed something quickly and it came just before the break when Danny Bartle cleverly turned and fired home on the stroke of half time.

Second half and Racing needed to make the man advantage count and it was mainly Warwick possession throughout, with the referee continually slowing the game down to the frustration of both teams. Lichfield defended superbly and it took a trademark Luke Cole goal to eventually reduce the deficit to one. Turner headed back a cross and a superb diving header from Cole crashed home.

It was game on now and although Racing continued the pressure Lichfield looked dangerous on the break and indeed Taylor had the ball in the net for the visitors but he was adjudged offside. The cards were still coming and Cole, attempting to win the ball in the penalty box, received a second yellow and his marching orders. Bannister then saved smartly from Massey to keep Warwick in the game as City continued to hit Racing on the break as the hosts committed men forward.

The drama wasn't quite done and with the time almost 5pm, the continual stopping of the game eventually undid Lichfield as in the 96th minute a corner for Racing and surely the last chance now? Turner flicked on and the ball fell for 'keeper Bannister who was up for the corner and he hit a left foot volley that flew into the top corner to the delight of the Racing fans.

Racing host Brocton next Saturday, 3pm kickoff at Townsend Meadow.
