Warwick dig in in close encounter

Racing Club Warwick came out on top in a pulsating game to edge out Copsewood 2-3.

Copsewood who had been struggling in the league had been buoyed by recently beating Chelmsley Town and Warwick were looking to continue their winning form despite missing a few weekends of fixtures and with illness and injury preventing the recent three signings from making a start. Alongside the missing new boys Cresswell, Bartle and Curry were Wade Malley, Ian Billington and Luke Cole amongst others and Warwick's rustiness showed early on as a fine Copsewood move down the right saw a dangerous ball played in for Redhead to fire home on just three minutes. Copsewood were well on top for the next ten minutes and almost got a second but the striker dragged his shot wide in a let off for Warwick.

Scott Turner headed over from a Henry Leaver corner and Ben Mackey had a double shot saved before Trea Bertie's shot was cleared off the line.

With the game now more even Joe Smith cut inside from the left and fired in a stinging shot that hit the far post and just went in before hitting the opposite post. Warwick were now looking more comfortable with Alex Price and Trayvon Powell providing good assistance to the attack and ex copsewood man Chris Johnston provided excellent coverage all over.

Second half began as the first ended with the game end to end but with the superb added attraction of a Copsewood fan with air horn chanting 'Money Money..Racing Club wonga' in what can only be a light hearted response to Warwick's fortunes changing from being a year on year also ran to a well managed and sustainable non league outfit, but it added to the banter with how the game panned out.

Mackey did well to evade the defender before firing his shot just wide but despite the play being end to end there were few chances until Alex Price chased down the ball after the Copsewood defenders switched off thinking the ball was running out of play. Price superbly picked out Scott Turner who headed firmly into the bottom corner on 77 minutes. The Warwick fans soon told the Copsewood contingent where the air horn could go but then Warwick inexplicably switched off and a long ball found ex Racer Sean Kavanagh who picked up the ball before firing well past Charlie Bannister on 80 minutes and the air horn reigned supreme again. Kavanagh raced off in celebration and was mobbed by his team mates but the joy was short lived as Racing showed the character that will be needed to continue their promotion push. As the 90 minutes ticked over a Sean Castleton shot cannoned back off the cross bar but only to Trea Bertie who showed superb technique to volley home past the diving Copsewood players.

Warwick almost threw it away again when in celebrating in their own half the game kicked off without them but fortunately the striker fired wide under pressure from the quickly retreating Warwick players. From then on Warwick stayed switched on and saw the game out to earn a valuable three points, against a team who will surely race up the table in the weeks ahead, and several lessons well learnt on how teams will approach games against them as the season runs it's course.
