Racing Club Warwick 4 Ilkeston Town FC 2
Warwick end Ilkeston run
Racing Club Warwick turned their recent fine away form into home and ended second placed lkeston Town’s nine match winning run as the Racers were excellent value in their 4-2 win.
With a Central Defence depleted with injury, Martin Hutchcox joining Joe Smith and Jamie Coleman on the injury list, Rich Powell started at the back alongside Paul Holland, before Powell himself was replaced by Henry Leaver in the first half.
Despite the injuries, Warwick stated well and took the lead in the fifth minute when Luke Cole superbly slotted home a Trea Bertie run and cross from the right hand side.
Ilkeston could not get the ball in the first ten minutes but almost equalised when Tim Hopkinson fired horribly wide at the back post after Lavelle White had played the ball square. Then, against the run of the play the Robins were level in the 15th minute. Hopkinson beat Tom Cross to a long ball through and pulled back for Walker who's shot was deflected inside the post.
Sean Kavanagh then shot wide after bursting through before Ilkeston took the lead. Alex Marshall robbed Paul Holland before slotting the ball past Cross to the dismay of the Warwick crowd who had sen their team well on top up until that point.
It was now a lot more even and just as it looked like Warwick would trail at the break, Ilkeston keeper Ian Deakin fouled Kavanagh in the area. with Deakin limping off, substitute keeper Jamie Hannis was well beaten by Martin Slevin’s spot kick.
The home team continued the fine form in the second half and Bertie had an effort blocked by Charlie Jemson before Billy Bennett’s interception denied the forward what would have been a tap in. With Warwick well on top now Ilkeston nearly went ahead again but Cross saved well from an Ilkeston free-kick that was deflected off of Marc Passey. Then it exploded again. Bertie picked up a ball on the right and fired across the keeper and into the the bottom corner to take the lead for the hosts. Lewis Hudson almost scored at the far post after a great cross from Kavanagh and Warwick were now looking confident and did put the game out of Ilkeston's reach on 75 minutes. Bertie was put in again before being brought down by Hannis to give them another penalty. Slevin stepped up again to send Hannis the wrong way and make it a deserved 4-2.
